MEETING
Performing a Team Rescue: Turning Around a Team in Trouble
You're 6 months into a new role and the team you worked hard to build is gelling and expanding. Just when you're settling into a comfortable rhythm, your manager comes to you:
- Manager: The web team is in trouble and I need your help.
- You: What kind of help?
- Manager: Replace the lead and put out the fires.
- You: You're asking me to fix a team led by the most senior manager in the org, and its 3 times the size of the team I currently manage?
6 months later, you hand off the team to a new leader in the best shape this team has ever been in.
During this roundtable discussion - led by Zhuang (Strong) Liang, Director of Engineering @ Affirm - we'll share stories and insights from various team rescues and identify best practices which made the rescues possible.
A little bit more about our host, Strong:
Strong is an engineering leader with over 15 years in the field, specializing in infrastructure, site reliability engineering, and observability. Before serving as Director of Engineering at Affirm, he served in EM roles at Uber and Google. He's passionate about growth at all levels: the team, the product, and personal.
